Business Intelligence or Business Process Management?

Technology serving businesses is something that has existed for some years now. During this time, different informatic solutions have been developed, with several functionalities and approaches, but all of them with the purpose of improving the performance of companies for making them to generate more profiting in better conditions for everyone involved. There are two main solutions of this kind: on the one hand, Business Intelligence, and on the other, the so-called Business Process Management, which seeks to improve business processes. There arises the question of which one is better: Business Process Management or Business Intelligence.

Business process management

Business Process Management is a solution aiming to support the management of all the internal activities of the company, this is, the activities that are a part of business’ process, which, in the end, are the constituents of the operation of the organization. With BPM, the organizations have the possibility of integrating the activities through information technologies and thus optimizing the whole operation:

Business process management (BPM), as defined by Gartner, is a discipline that uses various tools and methods to design, model, execute, monitor, and optimize business processes. A business process coordinates the behavior of people, systems,

information, and things to produce business outcomes in support of a business strategy.

The goal of BPM is then to perform as the director of the orchestra that is the company, in order for results to be the best possible:

BPM focuses on putting a consistent, automated process in place for routine transactions and human interactions. It helps to reduce the business’s operational costs by decreasing waste and rework, and by increasing the overall efficiency of the team (happyfox.com).

This concise description allows us to ask ourselves which one of these solutions is better for a company: Business Intelligence or Business Process Management? But actually, as we have seen, these are no excluding solutions, because each one is in charge of a different aspect of the business.

Business Intelligence as a complement for Business Process Management

Business Intelligence works with the information related to external transaction, while BPM organizes all that is related with internal aspects, which are the ones that must be performed for delivering products and services to customers.

This means that there is no need to choose one solution over the other, but that both can be used simultaneously in a business. The important thing is to find the right connection between the two, in such a way that the systems in one can complement the systems in the other. Having this in place, the organization not only improves factors related to the corporate image, but also optimizes processes and develops a comfortable work which is adequate for employees, customers and users in general.

The approach offered by Dexon BPM is exactly one that seeks to achieve a coordination between our solution and any other system being used by the company. For achieving this, Dexon BPM is designed for using the structured as well as the unstructured data produced by the company. With this, the organization can coordinate corporate processes but also have access to the information for it to be used in any activity needed, as the analyses made by other solutions or by Business Intelligence.

Thus, this solution is an ally for the development of business that want to be up to date with the rhythm that technology gives to businesses in 21st century.
